We checked 2,000 Hindi tech thumbnails at 168 pixels. Most text disappears.

Open YouTube on your phone. Hold it at arm's length, the way you actually watch. That thumbnail in the feed is about 168 pixels wide, roughly the size of a matchbox. Most creators design at 1280 pixels on a laptop and never look at it small.

What we did

We took 2,000 thumbnails from Hindi tech channels between 10,000 and 500,000 subscribers, scaled each one to 168 pixels wide, and asked one question: can you still read the text and recognise the face?

What survived

Three words or fewer. Text with up to three words stayed readable in 91% of cases. At five words it dropped to 34%. At seven, almost nothing.

One face, filling at least a quarter of the frame. Faces smaller than that turned into a smudge. Two faces both shrank below the threshold unless the thumbnail was split down the middle with hard edges.

Numbers and rupee amounts. ₹15,000 reads at 168 pixels when the same space in words does not. Digits are simple shapes with high contrast.

What died

• Sentences. Anything that reads like a caption is a caption, not a thumbnail.
• Thin fonts. Below 700 weight the strokes vanish at small size.
• Text over a busy photo without a solid block or heavy shadow behind it.
• Anything in the bottom-right corner, where the duration badge sits.

The test that takes ten seconds

Shrink your thumbnail to 168 pixels wide. If you cannot read it from arm's length, your viewer cannot either, and they are scrolling faster than you are looking.

What to change tomorrow

Cut the text to three words. Move the face to one side so the text has clean space. Put a solid shape behind the words. Check the bottom-right corner is empty. That is the whole list.
